  • How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs

What are Bed Bugs? Bed Bugs are small, egg shaped insects which feed on human blood. Bed bugs are small - adults flat bodies about the size of an apple seed. After feeding their bodies swell and change to a reddish colour. Although bedbugs do not fly, they can move quickly over floors, walls, and ceilings. Bed bugs need a human host to survive They can lay dormant for a very long time. In fact, adult bed bugs often lie dormant for many months without food. As businesses have closed for many months during the Coronavirus lockdown, bed bugs may have been lying dormant, waiting for a human host to feed on. As the extended lockdown continued, particularly for the hospitality industry, adult bed bugs have waiting to feast on a human host and as businesses such as hotels, B&Bs, self-catering accommodation and other hospitality businesses open up, unsuspecting members of the public could become the next feeding frenzy for dormant bed bugs. As landlords start to rent out vacant properties again and house sales start moving, bed bugs could already be present in clean, vacated properties meaning that there could be a problem when you move into a new home. Common Signs you May Have Bed Bugs What to look out for? Blood stains on sheets or pillowcases Dark or rusty spots of bed bug excrement on sheets and mattresses, bed clothes, and walls Shed skins in areas where bed bugs hide for example in the crevices of mattresses An offensive, musty smell (scent emitted from bed bugs’ glands) Bites!! - when bed bugs bite humans they will often do in in clusters of bites. Each cluster usually contains 3 to 5 bites that appear in a zigzag pattern Common Places to Find Bed Bugs Where to look? Mattresses (especially in the crevices) Bed box springs Walls near beds and other furniture Bedside tables Headboards and bed frames Wardrobes Sheets and other bed clothes Curtains and carpets Luggage and clothing Sofas, armchairs or other furniture which are regularly used For more information on bed bugs, visit www.pgmpestcontrol.co.uk/bed-bug-control "Pests are our passion, we follow the CRRU Code of Best Practice" Are you looking for the best and affordable Pest Control Company in Hereford or Worcester? • Preparing for Change: Professional Rodenticide Users Granted Two-Year Transition Period

Adapting to Change: Key Updates on Second-Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides - A Two-Year Preparation Period for Pest Controllers, Gamekeepers, and Farmers In response to the recent update from the UK Rodenticide Stewardship Regime, professionals in pest control, gamekeeping, and farming are granted a two-year transition to prepare for significant changes concerning second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs). Despite resistance from certain farming organisations, the directors of the stewardship regime, operated by the Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use UK (CRRU), deemed these changes essential for the regime to fulfil its purpose. Starting from January 2026, all purchasers and users of professional SGAR products are required to possess either a stewardship-specific training certificate, less than five years old, or an older one along with evidence of membership in a stewardship-specific Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme. "The most recent headline is that a stubbornly static 80% of barn owls carry residues of one or more SGARs. These changes are designed to strengthen stewardship and protect essential uses of rodenticides for all professional user sectors, especially farmers, by meeting GOG environmental targets". Dr Alan Buckle, CRRU chairman As the expiration dates of five-year certificates approach, holders have the option to either undergo training for requalification or join a CPD scheme. Since January 2023, all stewardship-specific training and certification approved by CRRU has been independently regulated by Ofqual. All qualifying CPD schemes will also be CRRU-approved. Two are already available from BPCA Registered and Basis Prompt, with more expected to follow in 2024. Stay informed and prepare for a sustainable future in pest management. Since its inception in 2016, the regime, led by the HSE Government Oversight Group, aimed to reduce wildlife exposure to rodenticides. The primary indicator of this goal is the incidence of SGAR residues in annual surveys of deceased barn owls submitted to the Predatory Bird Monitoring Scheme by the public. Despite advancements in competence, best practices, increased awareness of potential adverse impacts of rodenticides on wildlife, and mitigation efforts across all three user groups, the target to minimise wildlife exposure to rodenticides, as set by CRRU chairman Dr. Alan Buckle, has yet to be fully achieved. Maintaining cleanliness in your home can help prevent these unwelcome guests. < Rodent information > Silverfish: Often found in damp and dark areas, silverfish become more active in the winter. Ensure proper ventilation in your home, fix leaks promptly, and use dehumidifiers to reduce moisture levels, making your space less appealing to these pests. < Silverfish Information > Moths: Winter woolens stored away in lofts or closets can become a breeding ground for clothes moths. Regularly inspect and clean storage areas, and consider using moth repellents or cedar blocks to protect your clothing. < Moth Information > Spiders: While most spiders are harmless, they can become more noticeable in the winter as they seek warmth indoors. Keep your home dust and clutter-free, seal entry points to discourage these eight-legged visitors. Cluster Flies: Cluster flies are known for seeking shelter in homes during colder months. • Rodent-Proof Your Home: A Guide to Winter Pest Control

Key Takeaways Spotting Rodent Red Flags Sealing Entry Points Early Intervention Strategies Our Proven Pest Control Solutions Spotting Rodent Red Flags As the temperature drops rodents seek warmth and shelter, making our homes attractive targets. Stay vigilant for these rodent red flags: 1. Unusual Noises: If you hear scratching or scurrying sounds within walls or ceilings, it could be a sign of unwelcome furry guests. 2. Droppings: Keep an eye out for small, pellet-like droppings in hidden corners or near food sources. Different pests leave distinct droppings, so identifying them is crucial. 3. Gnaw Marks: Rodents have a constant need to gnaw to keep their teeth in check. Check for gnaw marks on wires, wood, or other materials around your home. 4. Nests or Nesting Materials: Discovering shredded paper, fabric, or other nesting materials in secluded areas indicates rodent activity. Being proactive in identifying these signs can help you address rodent issues early, preventing a full-blown infestation. If you notice any of these red flags, it’s time to take action to rodent-proof your home. Sealing Entry Points Rodents are adept at squeezing through tiny openings, so sealing entry points is key to keeping them out. Focus on these areas: 1. Gaps Around Doors and Windows: Check for any openings where doors and windows meet frames. Weatherstripping and door sweeps can help eliminate these entry points. 2. Vents and Chimneys: Install mesh screens over vents and chimney openings to prevent rodents from gaining access. 3. Gaps in Walls: Inspect the exterior of your home for cracks or gaps. Seal them with caulk or another appropriate material to deny rodents easy entry. 4. Utility Openings: Secure openings around utility lines and pipes. Use steel wool or caulk to fill gaps, ensuring rodents can’t slip through. By diligently sealing these potential entry points, you create a formidable barrier against rodents seeking shelter from the winter chill. This proactive measure significantly reduces the risk of infestations in your home. Early Intervention Strategies Swift action is crucial when dealing with rodents. Employ these early intervention strategies to nip potential infestations in the bud: 1. Regular Inspections: Conduct routine inspections, especially in vulnerable areas like the kitchen, loft, and basement. Early detection allows for prompt intervention. 2. Maintain Cleanliness: Rodents are attracted to food sources. Keep kitchen surfaces clean, store food in sealed containers, and promptly clean up spills to minimise attractions. 3. Outdoor Debris Removal: Trim vegetation and remove debris near your home, as these can provide hiding spots and pathways for rodents. Implementing these early intervention strategies ensures that you stay one step ahead, maintaining a pest-free home during the winter months. • Having a problem with Bed Bugs or Fleas?

If you’re suffering from itchy lumps or experiencing bites on your skin, then you’re right to be concerned as you may have a bed bug or flea problem. Bites and itching are often the first sign of a problem and usually when someone gets in touch with pest control. As the weather starts to warm up and with more and more of us spending long periods of time indoors, fleas thrive in these conditions. Bed bugs look for human hosts to feed on and with the property market currently booming and sale and rental properties going on and off the market regularly this creates a problem as bedbugs lie dormant waiting for their next human host to take up residence. This week we’ll take a look at common signs for both bedbugs and fleas as people often mix up the two when the first sign is bites. Where are bedbugs and fleas commonly found? Bed Bugs tend to lay their eggs in cracks and crevices near human hosts so often will be found in bedrooms. Common areas we find evidence of bedbug activity are bed frames; skirting boards; behind loose wallpaper and plug sockets. These are all ideal places for bedbugs to hide out and lay their eggs. Fleas love a pet so often people first spot signs on fleas on their dogs or cats but fleas can also be found in pets’ bedding; furniture; carpets and rugs. TOP BED BUG TIP Back brush your pets or brush over a piece of paper to spot fleas or their droppings more easily Bites – bed bugs or fleas? Bed bugs mostly feed at night on their human host so you may find itchy red spots or lumps on your body. Flea bites, on the other hand, tend to be around the ankles and legs and typically are a small red spot around 5mm in diameter. Am I spotting a bed bug or flea? Take a closer look at your bedding, bed frame and mattress for signs of bed bugs such as dark ink line spots or blood smears. Also, you may find your laundry and bedding smells unpleasant. Check pets for fleas – are your pets scratching? Look closely at carpets and rugs – fleas jump! Treating your bed bugs or fleas A common complaint we hear from people is that they have tried to treat bedbugs and fleas themselves but they keep coming back. Whilst it is possible to treat bedbugs and fleas yourself DIY treatments don’t usually work in our experience. That’s because DIY treatments aren’t as effective as those used by qualified pest controllers who have access to solutions that aren’t available to the general public. Fleas and bedbugs can be extremely unpleasant and people sometimes leave it until the problem gets really bad before they report it because they feel embarrassed. Autumn Pest Control Checklist Inspect and Seal Thoroughly inspect your home for cracks, gaps, and holes, and seal them with caulk or weatherstripping. Pay special attention to doors, windows, and foundation areas. Clean Up Outdoors Remove fallen leaves, overgrown vegetation, and other debris from your garden, as these can provide hiding spots for pests. Keep your outdoor areas well-maintained. Secure Rubbish Bins Make sure your rubbish bins have tight-fitting lids to prevent scavenging pests like squirrels and rodents. Firewood Care If you use firewood, store it away from your home and off the ground. Inspect it for pests before bringing it indoors. Professional Pest Inspection Consider scheduling a professional pest inspection to identify any potential problem areas in and around your home. Educate Your Family Ensure that everyone in your household knows the importance of keeping doors closed and not leaving food or crumbs out, as these can attract pests. Be Cautious with DIY Pest Control If you encounter stinging insects or potentially dangerous pests, it's best to call a pest control professional to handle the situation safely. Common Autumn Pests Rodents As the weather cools down, mice and rats start seeking shelter indoors to escape the cold. They can squeeze through tiny cracks and gaps in your home's foundation, making it crucial to seal any potential entry points. Stinging Insects In autumn, wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets become more aggressive as they prepare for the winter. Their nests can be found in eaves, shrubs, or even underground. Be cautious when dealing with these pests, as their stings can be painful and even life-threatening to those with allergies. Spiders With fewer insects available outdoors, spiders may venture inside in search of food. While most spiders are harmless, some, can pose health risks. Regular cleaning and sealing cracks can help keep them out. Ants Cool autumn temperatures can drive ants indoors in search of food and water. Keep your kitchen clean and store food in airtight containers to deter these pesky invaders. Stink Bugs These shield-shaped insects can emit a foul odor when threatened. They often enter homes seeking warmth. Seal cracks and crevices in your home's exterior to prevent them from getting inside. Preparing for Autumn's Unwanted Houseguests Autumn in our beautiful county of Herefordshire is a season of cozy fires, crisp air, and golden landscapes. It's also a time when certain pests, especially rodents like mice and rats, become more determined to find shelter and food inside our homes. To help you prepare for potential rodent infestations this autumn, we'll explore the behaviour and provide valuable tips to keep them away. Why Do Rodents Seek Shelter in Autumn? As the temperatures drop, rodents start searching for warm and sheltered places to escape the chill. In the UK, this often leads them straight into our homes. The Behaviour of Mice and Rats in Autumn Nesting Instinct: Female mice and rats, particularly, are on a mission to find a secure nesting site to give birth and raise their young. They're attracted to the warmth and safety offered by our homes. Food Scarcity As autumn progresses, the availability of food outdoors diminishes. Rodents venture indoors in search of easy meals, often raiding pantries and trash cans. Breeding Season For rodents, autumn marks the breeding season. An infestation can quickly spiral out of control, as a single pair can produce several litters in a year, with each litter containing multiple offspring. Preventing Rodent Infestations in Autumn Seal Entry Points: Thoroughly inspect your home for any openings or cracks that rodents can use to gain access. Pay close attention to areas around pipes, vents, doors, and windows. Seal gaps with caulk or weatherstripping. Maintain Your Garden: Keep your garden tidy by trimming overgrown vegetation, raking leaves, and eliminating clutter. Remove food sources like fallen fruits and secure compost bins. Store Food Securely: Invest in airtight containers for pantry items to prevent rodents from reaching your food supplies. Regular Cleaning: Maintain a clean and clutter-free home. Regularly clean up crumbs and food spills, and ensure that pet food is stored in sealed containers. Professional Inspection: Consider enlisting the services of a professional pest control expert for a comprehensive inspection and advice tailored to your property. Pet Precautions: If you have pets, be cautious about leaving their food out for extended periods, as this can attract rodents. By taking these proactive steps, you can significantly reduce the risk of a rodent infestation in your home this autumn.
