  • The Dangers of DIY Pest Control: 5 Reasons Why you Should Rethink it

Does DIY Pest Control Work? This week we’re taking a look at DIY pest control. A pest controller s' ‘phone regularly rings with stories from customers who’ve tried unsuccessfully to deal with a pest control problem themselves. Often, we’ll get calls from people who started with a small pest issue that they attempted to handle themselves with various potions they’ve purchased off the internet only to find that they haven’t solved the pest issue, the infestation has got significantly worse and they’re now out of pocket! We popped into a well-known national DIY store recently to check out the DIY pest control products on the market and were amazed at how many products were out there. There were literally dozens on the shelves and when we looked on the internet they run into thousands. Top 5 Reasons Why you Should be Wary about Undertaking DIY Pest Control Yourself You don’t know what you’re doing. Unless you’ve been trained to the same standards as professional pest controllers, it’s unlikely you’ll have the same knowledge and, more importantly, experience as they do. This knowledge, training and experience is essential for resolving pest problems quickly, effectively and humanely. You don’t know what you’re buying. Whilst products in reputable stores which have been through rigorous approval processes might be okay, the internet is an unregulated space and it’s very easy to buy a box or can of something with very little idea of what’s actually in it or whether it has passed, or even been through, a quality control process. You don’t know what you’re eradicating. Professional pest controllers are trained to carry out risk assessments and follow codes of practice to ensure that non-target species aren’t harmed when controlling pests . Imagine how horrified most of you would be to find out that in eradicating the pesky rats in your garden at the same time you accidentally poisoned your family pet, a barn owl or other non-target species. You might make the situation worse. There are various reasons why you might inadvertently make the situation worse but just a couple are that your DIY pest control may not work or work effectively meaning that you could very quickly increase a pest population over a short period of time. Also, some pests are resistant to some chemicals and the more DIY chemicals used, the more the pests evolve to become resistant and that’s a problem for us all! You could spend more in the long run. A pest treatment might seem expensive to you but consider this, repeatedly purchasing DIY products that don’t deal with the issue will soon add up. And, some pests have the ability to cause significant damage. An electric cable gnawed by mice or rats is not only dangerous but could prove costly to put right. And, our wood boring friends such as the Death Watch beetle , have the capacity to cause serious structural problems to properties. DIY PEST CONTROL Tips that WON’T COST A PENNY! Keep your windows and doors shut from pests. Remove your rubbish regularly and keep your bin lids on. Clear up spills and leftovers as soon as you’ve finished eating. Practice good hygiene , clean surfaces regularly; hoover and mop floors. Avoid buying natural fibres that might attract certain pests such as woollen rugs. Move things around your garden regularly to keep the rats on their toes – rats are neo-phobic which means they have a fear of new objects! Keep your garden tidy and cut back. DIY pest control can be a tempting option for homeowners looking to save money and take matters into their own hands. There are several reasons why DIY pest control is a bad idea: Lack of expertise: Pest control professionals have the training and experience to accurately identify pests and determine the best course of action for treatment. DIY solutions may not effectively target the specific type of pest, leading to continued infestations. Ineffective treatment: Pesticides and other pest control methods can be dangerous if not used properly. DIY treatments may not be applied correctly, leading to ineffective results or even harm to humans and pets. Health and safety concerns:  Pesticides and other pest control chemicals can be toxic and may pose a risk to humans and pets if handled improperly. Professionals are trained to safely handle and apply these products to minimize the risk of exposure. Damage to property: Improper application of pest control methods can result in damage to your home or yard. For example, using too much pesticide can kill plants or damage lawns. Legal issues:  In some cases, it may be illegal to use certain pest control methods or products without the proper training or licensing. Conclusion: While DIY pest control may seem like a cost-effective solution, it is often more effective and safer to hire a professional pest control company. If you are experiencing a pest issue then give your local pest controller a call. A professional pest controller will be happy to discuss the issue with you and explore the best options for dealing with your pest problem. • Thrips: Understanding the Pest

This week we’re taking a look at the commonly called “ Thunder Fly ” . These tiny insects are actually called Thrips and are black in colour and narrow with hairy wings measuring around 1.5mm. Thunder Flies Thrips are largely an agricultural pest which is why Herefordshire residents often report problems with Thunder Flies as our rural county has vast amounts of fields and agricultural properties. So how do these insects cause problems in residential properties and business premises? Well, they have been known to collect in significant numbers inside smoke detectors and this can trigger fire alarms to go off. Thrips feed on plant sap and on hot and humid days they congregate on window sills in large numbers. With climatic changes, these insects become more of a problem and can get into clothing and hair. This is largely a nuisance pest however and a small thrip infestation can normally be dealt with easily by the householder simply removing them from the property. However, a significant infestation of thunder flies would better be solved by a professional pest controller who has access to professional treatments to solve pest problems. Having problems with Thrips? Top Tip Use a professional pest controller. There are several reasons why people should hire a pest control company to get rid of thrips: Expertise : Pest control companies, like us, have trained professionals who have the knowledge and experience to effectively identify and control thrips infestations. A qualified pest controller will be able to determine the severity of the infestation, the type of thrips present and develop a plan to address the infestation. Safety: Pest control companies use professional-grade pesticides and equipment that are not available to the general public. These products are specially formulated to target specific pests and are applied by trained professionals who know how to handle them safely. Efficiency: Registered pest control companies have access to a wide range of tools and techniques to quickly and effectively eliminate thrips infestations. They may use different type of pesticides, integrate pest management techniques, and use equipment that is specifically designed for thrips control. Cost-effective: Hiring a pest control company can save you money in the long run. They will be able to quickly and effectively eliminate the infestation, reducing the need for repeated treatments and minimising crop damage. Monitoring: A pest control company will also monitor the infestation and will advise further on how to prevent future infestations. They may also provide an ongoing preventative service to ensure that thrips populations do not reach damaging levels again. Frequently Asked Questions about Thrips What do thrips look like? Thrips are tiny, slender insects that can range in color from yellow to black. They have fringed wings and are usually less than 2 mm in length. What do thrips eat? Thrips feed on plant tissues, including leaves, flowers, and fruits. They use their sharp, needle-like mouthparts to pierce the surface of the plant and suck out the sap. How do thrips damage plants? Thrips can cause a variety of problems for plants, including discoloration, distorted growth, and reduced yields. They can also act as vectors for plant diseases. How do thrips reproduce? Thrips reproduce sexually, with females laying eggs on or in the plant tissue. The eggs hatch into tiny, wingless nymphs that resemble adults. Are thrips dangerous to humans or pets? Thrips are not dangerous to humans or pets, but they can cause an allergic reaction in some people. Conclusion Hiring a professional qualified pest control company  to get rid of thrips can provide peace of mind and save time and money in the long run. They can help to protect your plants and crops, prevent damage, and ensure that your farm or garden remains productive. A trained commercial pest control  professional will have the technical knowledge and access to a range of professional use products and equipment which are not available to the public. • Bird Mites: What They Are and How to Get Rid of Them

What you'll learn on this page about Bird Mites. What are Bird Mites. Where do Bird Mites live? Can Bird Mites Live on Humans or Pets? How To Know If You Have a Bird Mite Problem. Bird Mite Frequently Asked Questions . Help, Support and Guidance. What are Bird Mites Bird mites’ is a collective term for a number of different types of mites that are parasites of different bird species such as pigeons, sparrows, and poultry. They are tiny little arachnids relative to ticks and spiders. These avian mites can be found in low numbers, close to birds, their nests, and poultry houses, but, if the conditions are favourable, their colony can grow to thousands. Bird mites feed on the blood, skin, and keratin of birds. If these hosts are not present, mites can ingress into properties in search for food where they can bite humans and pets such as dogs and cats. Where do Bird Mites live? The conditions for bird mites are warm and moist conditions. They usually live in close proximity to pigeon or other bird nesting areas. This is why they are often found in upstairs in properties where nests are present in attic spaces or roof spaces. They will travel distances to find food if a nest doesn’t provide them with the food they need. Inside properties, pigeon mites usually gravitate towards the windows and ceilings and loft spaces. Once inside, mites will burrow into fabric material, cracks, and crevices to lay their eggs. Can Bird Mites Live on Humans or Pets? Bird mites are adaptable and can infest a variety of mammals such as dogs, cats, mice, rats, and other domestic animals. Even if there are no nests nearby mites can travel on other animals into homes and businesses. If there are no animal hosts available the bird mite will bite humans although usually, the insect can’t survive on human blood alone. Bird mites require a host to survive, so they will usually die within three weeks if they do not find one. Because of their tiny size, mites are extremely difficult to identify and very difficult to eradicate / control. How To Know If You Have a Bird Mite Problem? If you suspect a bird mite infestation, it is crucial to identify and eliminate the source, such as removing bird nests and thoroughly cleaning affected areas. Consulting a pest control professional may also be necessary to effectively manage the infestation. Bites The best way is to rule out other potential sources of bites. For example fleas and bed bugs. If you’ve ruled those out along with mosquitos then you may have pigeon mites. Crawling sensation If you sense a crawling sensation at night this could be a sign as bird mites tend to feed at night. Rule out similar causes As mentioned above, try and rule out other potential more common sources such as fleas or bed bugs. Environment clues Check the humidity levels in your home as high humidity is an ideal condition for bird mites. Bird activity nearby The most obvious clue are nests. If you have found nests and you’ve got bites, the chances of you having a mite issue are increased. The best way to get rid of bird mites in the first place is a professional removal and insecticide treatment of the bird nest and a clean-up of the area with a biocide, which can be done by a qualified pest controller. Bird Mite Frequently Asked Questions What are bird mites, and how do they affect humans in the UK? Bird mites are tiny parasitic arthropods that primarily infest birds but can also bite humans. In the UK, bird mites can be problematic when they enter homes from bird nests or infested buildings, causing itchy bites and skin irritations in humans. How can I identify bird mite infestations in the UK? Identifying bird mite infestations typically involves observing the presence of mites, which are barely visible to the naked eye, but may appear as tiny moving dots on surfaces or skin. Additionally, if you've recently had bird nests near your home or notice increased biting sensations, it could indicate a possible bird mite infestation. How can I prevent bird mite infestations in the UK? To prevent bird mite infestations, it's essential to take measures such as securing and blocking access to bird nests, sealing any cracks or openings that birds can use to enter your home, and regularly cleaning and maintaining your property to deter bird activity. How can I eliminate bird mites from my home in the UK? Eliminating bird mites from yo ur home in the UK may require professional pest control assistance. They can employ methods such as insecticide treatments, vacuuming, steam cleaning, and targeted bird nest removal to eradicate the mites and prevent future infestations. It is crucial to address both the mites and their source, such as bird nests or infested areas, to ensure effective elimination. Can bird mites transmit diseases to humans in the UK? Bird mites in the UK are primarily considered a nuisance pest rather than disease vectors. While their bites can cause irritation and discomfort, they are generally not known to transmit diseases to humans. Are bird mites only active during certain seasons in the UK? Bird mites can be active throughout the year in the UK, but their activity levels may vary depending on the availability of bird nests or suitable hosts. However, it's worth noting that bird mite infestations may become more apparent in the spring and summer when bird breeding and nesting activity increase. Can bird mites infest indoor pet birds in the UK? Yes, bird mites can infest indoor pet birds in the UK. If your pet bird has been in contact with wild birds, or if there is an infestation in your home, there is a risk of bird mites transferring to your pet bird. It's important to regularly inspect and clean the bird's living area, including cages, perches, and toys, and seek veterinary assistance if you suspect a bird mite infestation in your pet bird. • Think you Have a Wood Wasp Problem? Learn all about the Giant Wood Wasp

The Horntail, aka “giant wood wasp” or “greater horntail” is often mistaken for a wasp with its yellow and black bands. However, the horntail is harmless to humans as it does not sting. We recently came across a horntail and thought we’d share the photo we took to let people know what to look out for. What does the horntail look like? Well, it’s often mistaken for a wasp and it’s easy to see why. But, on closer inspection you can see that the horntail has a large barrel-shaped body with no waist, unlike the wasp which has a distinctive waist. Its colour may also change from black to metallic blue and sometimes black, red and yellow. The females have a long ‘sting’ called an ovipositor; she uses this to penetrate timber (usually pine) and then buries her eggs deep into the wood. Female wood wasps tend to look for dead /depleted trees to lay eggs. A female wood wasp can lay up to 200 eggs. Larvae emerge into adults by chewing wood. Eggs develop into insects with six legs and strong jaws – strong enough to gnaw through solid wood! It can take around five years to reach maturity and tunnel through the timber. Is the horntail dangerous? Horntails can, and do, make large holes on interior surfaces looking. The damage can be horrendous and found anywhere such as room tiles, hardwood floors, carpets and wallboard. They can also make their way through soft metal such as lead. Although they do not sting, they can still be quite scary as they are very noisy buzzers! Most worryingly is the fact they can cause damage to buildings. If you think you have a wood wasp nest, you should call in a professional Pest controller. It may also be advisable to call a qualified surveyor to inspect property for structural damage. • The difference between Bees, Wasps and Hornets

This week we’re looking at the differences between these buzzing insects. Bees, Wasps and Hornets. Bees There’s a lot of different species of bee but the most common, and loved ones, in the UK are the bumble bee and the honey bee. Bees are massively important to our ecosystem. They are pollinators which essentially helps our food supplies in the UK. Bees pollinate around a third of what we eat. Bees are fascinating creatures, storing their honey in complex hives made from wax which you might better know as honeycomb. These bees are golden in colour with tiny hairs all over that give them a fuzzy look. Bees are happy to go about their business undisturbed. They won’t normally bother you if you don’t bother them. If a bee is threatened it may sting but this is rare because once a bee has stung you, it’s sting comes away from its body and it dies. Sometimes feral swarms can set up home in chimneys and wall cavities which can present problems so if you do have a swarm i t’s best to contact a bee keeper or a qualified pest controller . Wasps Whilst wasps are early pollinators they main function is to act as a natural predator. There are many thousands of wasp species so it can be difficult to differentiate between them. Wasps are often considered a pest because they build nests close to places which the public frequent such as restaurants and cafes and also in gardens. Some people are allergic to wasp stings which makes them even more of a public health issue. Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency. If not treated quickly it can be fatal. If you see someone with symptoms you should call for an ambulance immediately – dial 999. Unlike bees, wasps don’t die when they sting. Like bees, they won’t normally attack unless they feel threatened however, if they do they can (and will) sting multiple times – ouch! And wasps will also call for back up by sending out a pheromone which signals to other wasps they need help. Getting stung by multiple wasps can be very serious which is why we recommend you don’t try to treat or remove a wasp nest yourself. Always call a professional pest controller who is trained to deal with wasps. Pest c ontrollers use special equipment to protect themselves. Hornets It is unlikely you will see a hornet as they are not a common sight. However, they are the heavyweight of the wasp world – coming in at twice the size of a wasp they can look very frightening! Our native hornet is the European Hornet which has brown and yellow markings. Asian hornets are slightly smaller and have black or dark brown markings with a distinct yellow band at the rear, a bright yellow belt at the waist and a black head with an orange or yellow face. They are not native to the UK and are an invasive predatory species which could have a destructive impact on our wildlife. Hornet stings are often more painful due to the level of venom in their sting. If you think you have a hornet nest or if you spot a hornet give PGM & SON a call, we remove hornets and report. It is important to be aware of the differences between bees, wasps, and hornets. This will help you to avoid being stung and to take the necessary steps to protect yourself and your family from these insects. As there are so many different types of wasp and bee, the best thing to do if you are concerned about a buzzing insect is to give PGM & Son Pest Control a call. • Wasp Nest Removal in Hereford

Got Wasps? We’ve Got it Covered! Last week we had a lovely brief heat wave across Herefordshire and, as we start to head into the Summer months, wasps have already started to become a problem. The Queen wasps have been emerging from hibernation, the warm weather activating them to start to populate new colonies. Did you know that a wasp nest can produce around one hundred Queen wasps each season? That gives you an idea of how rapidly wasps can become a problem in your home or business in Herefordshire. Wasps can become very aggressive and, whilst a wasp won’t go out of their way to sting you, they can and do sting with very little provocation. If you get too close to a wasp nest or agitate them, you may expect to be on the end of a wasp sting. Have you been stung by a wasp? A wasp sting can be very painful. Wasp sting symptoms may include swelling around the wasp sting site for around 24 hours or more, itchiness, a sharp burning pain and a visible mark or welt where the wasp’s stinger punctured the skin. Ouch! Advice for treating a wasp sting Always thoroughly clean the area with soap and water to remove the venom. You can also apply an ice pack or cold compress to reduce swelling and take an over-the-counter antihistamine. Raising the affected area can also help as elevation can help to reduce swelling. Try not to scratch the affected area as this can lead to infections and cause more issues. If you’ve been stung by a wasp and your symptoms don’t improve over the next few days or you’re worried about a wasp sting or the wound becomes infected (for example pus, increased pain / swelling / redness) then contact your GP or call NHS 111 for advice . When wasps are a threat to public health Where someone’s body reacts adversely to a wasp sting, they can experience an allergic reaction. In some cases, an allergy can become quite serious; in rare cases fatal. If you or someone you’re with is stung by a wasp or wasps and experience any of the following symptoms you should seek immediate medical assistance: Swelling of the face, lips or throat (anaphylaxis), difficulty swallowing Dizziness Hives or itchiness in areas of the body not directly affected by the sting Feeling lightheaded and nauseous or vomiting Loss of consciousness Stomach cramps Sudden drop in blood pressure, weak or racing pulse or fast heart rate Wheezing, breathing difficulties Dial 999 for an ambulance if you or someone else displays signs of a severe reaction. At PGM & Son Wasp Control Hereford we will always do our best to prioritise call outs where there is a clear and immediate threat to public health. Please let us know when you call if you, or a member of your family, has an allergy to wasp stings so that we can do our best to get to you as soon as possible. • Rats on Allotments

We report regularly on the importance of preventative pest control. Recently, we brought you a story of rat misery in loft spaces and this week we want to highlight the increasing problems of rats on allotments together with the increasing issues arising from people keeping chickens. Check out the video of these rats enjoying the spoils at an allotment. Their brazenness in broad daylight will shock many of you but this isn’t new. And, with increasing numbers of people turning to self-sufficiency and keeping chickens, the problem is growing. Top Tips for a Rat Free Environment If you're an allotment holder, grow your own fruit and veg at home or keep chickens, it’s worth having a read of this blog, check out the video above and read our top tips for a rat free environment below. Removal of Harbourage (places to live / shelter) Remove all debris, rubbish, old equipment from the plot Minimise the amount of materials you keep on plot (e.g. timber) Ensure that any structure is housed on hard standing (e.g. concrete; paving slabs) to prevent rodents from burrowing in underneath. For example, shed/s, storage units, greenhouses etc. Removal of Food Sources We recognise that this is a tall order on an allotment particularly! However, there are some steps you can take, including: Not leaving household waste on site, including in compost bins Harvesting fruit and vegetables promptly Don’t leave discarded fruit and vegetables around Turn the contents of your compost bin/s regularly Keep any food / compost securely (e.g. use bins with solid sides and lids; add a wire mesh lining in the base etc.) Do not feed birds or other animals at your plot. If you have chickens, clear up any left-over food as soon as possible Store seeds, bulbs, chicken feed etc. in rodent-proof containers Ensure Good Housekeeping Keep your plot tidy – encourage neighbouring properties to do the same Visit regularly, make your presence known (e.g. kicking compost bins) Inspect the plot regularly Thoroughly wash (and peel, as appropriate) the fruit and vegetables you harvest and destroy all vegetables with signs of rodent damage. Note that rats carry risk of disease including Weil’s, Salmonella and Leptospirosis and they urinate everywhere) If you discover you have a rat infestation, make sure you wear disposable gloves when dealing with the problem and harvesting your vegetables Keep your shed/s / chicken runs / storage unit/s / greenhouse/s etc. secure and in good order; check regularly for signs of rats living underneath. If you are an allotment-holder and find you have a problem, inform your local authority as soon as possible. In Herefordshire , you can find more information at: http://www.herefordcitycouncil.gov.uk/your-city/council-services/allotments/ Our message of the day to all allotment holders. Killing rodents can only provide short term control of populations. Sustainable control can only be achieved by reducing the rodent carrying capacity of the environment. The best way to deal with rodent infestations is not to have them in the first place. And remember, it’s a criminal offence to cause unnecessary harm to any animal. You could be fined or imprisoned if you kill non-target species when putting down poison or traps. You should always seek professional pest control advice.

  • What To Do If You Find a Hornet’s Nest?

This week we’re looking at the GOOD, the BAD and the UGLY – Not the Spaghetti Western but the European and Asian Hornets. The Good The Hornet is Mother Nature’s pest controller. They feed on aphids, which makes them a gardener’s dream and the hornet is an important pollinator. Despite their fearsome appearance the hornet isn’t actually an aggressive pest. Hornets are quite shy insects and, away from their nest, it’s very rare to encounter a run-in with a hornet. Hornets are also relatively uncommon. The Bad Hornets are big, much bigger than the common wasp and due to their size and features their appearance can be alarming. They also make a very loud buzzing noise which can be quite frightening, particularly near a hornet nest. Hornets can sting multiple times and, due to the level of venom they carry a single sting can be extremely painful. The Ugly The Asian hornet! Although the Asian hornet doesn’t pose any greater risk to humans than their European cousin, they pose a serious threat to honey bee populations. They cause major damage to honey bee colonies and you know how we LOVE OUR BEES AT PGM PEST CONTROL! What to Do If You Spot a Hornet’s Nest?
