  • Permanent poisoning of rodents - A thing of the past in Herefordshire

Recent updates to the regulation and accompanying guidance means that permanent outdoor baiting should, thankfully, be a thing of the past. Permanent rodent poisoning (known as “baiting”) poses a real risk to wildlife. In the 1980s and 1990s when permanent baiting was common, widespread cases were found of barn owls contaminated with rodenticides. Unless there is no effective alternative, permanent baiting is now effectively illegal. New labelling adopted by the Health and Safety Executive following rules from the European Commission, mean that there is a legal duty imposed on professional rodenticide users to follow the guidance contained on the label. And Brexit won’t change this; it’s highly unlikely the UK Government will relax these rules after Brexit so it is important for all rodenticide users to understand the requirements. Everyone knows the law can be a minefield so its important to consult the professionals. You should only use a professional pest controller who actively promotes alternatives to permanent baiting. At PGM & SON Pest Control Herefordshire, we are always concerned about the potential effects on non-target species. We encourage our clients to follow good alternative pest prevention and control measures. For example: * Effective proofing * Regular monitoring and thorough inspections * Looking at neighbouring properties / sites * Use of non-toxic monitoring bait * Use of traps in bait boxes and remote monitoring sensors * Good hygiene and housekeeping Once you’ve got an infestation, particularly if it’s a large one, we understand that it can be problematic to avoid baiting, however, baiting should only be used as a short-term measure to treat the problem. The cause of the problem must be thoroughly investigated, and steps taken to ensure that the issue does not recur. With the decline of natural predators, change in climate and the way in which we humans live unfortunately the rodent population is on the increase. We need to find ways to live in harmony with these pests, recognising that humans have contributed to their increase in numbers and their change in habit. So, if you have a rodent problem we understand you want to eradicate the problem as soon as possible. However, be very wary of pest controllers who simply lay poison down to deal with the problem. This is only a short-term solution and, if they use it as a long-term solution they may well be breaking the law. Your pest controller should be able to advise you on long-term preventative measures. At PGM & SON Hereford, we offer holistic pest control advice and services. Call us now if you have a rat problem or mice you want to get rid of. • Happ-y & Pest-Free Herefordshire!

HAPP-Y & PEST-FREE - That’s the PGM mission for its customers. At PGM & SON Pest Control Hereford we really do want our customers to be HAPPY and PEST-FREE. And to make sure we deliver on our mission, we don’t stop at eradicating pests. In fact, a large proportion of our time is spent offering advice, solutions, education and guidance. We know that when someone experiences a pest problem, they need help and advice quickly. We offer lots of ways to contact us – for example, did you know you can use our instant chat service on our website? Although we offer lots of modern ways to contact us, we find many customers prefer a good old fashioned chat! Either face to face or over the ‘phone, our pest control technician offers friendly, confidential advice. So don’t be afraid to give us a call – we’ve seen and heard it all! Something many customers ask is for a discrete service. We won’t turn up to your property announcing our presence. Unlike many pest controllers whose vehicles have prominent signs announcing pest control is in town, we have discrete signs on our vehicle which we can remove at request. There’s no need for anyone to feel ashamed of having a pest problem of course but for those who prefer others not to know they’ve got a pest controller on site (for example, businesses), we can carry out pest control services confidentially and discretely. What else do customers want? Well, they want a quick response. If you’ve got a pest control problem the last thing you want to do is hang around for days or even weeks on end to get the problem sorted out. We’re a local Herefordshire based pest control company. That means we can offer Herefordshire residents and businesses a super-fast response time. Often, we can offer same day service so just ask us for availability. Another thing that’s important to customers is value for money. At PGM & SON Hereford we have a fair and transparent pricing policy. We always tell you what you have to pay up front. Never agree to a pest controller treating a pest problem for you without asking how much you’ll have to pay. And, if you want to check whether your pest controller is offering value for money, get at least one other quote. We’d also strongly advise getting a local pest controller to give you a quote if you’ve been quoted by one of the national pest control firms. Quite often, a local firm can offer a lower price as they don’t have the overheads or mileage costs the nationals do. Customers also want to know the trades-person they are dealing with is genuine, qualified and offers great customer service. Always ask for details of qualifications and insurances because we’re happy to share them and if your pest controller won’t share them with you that’s cause for concern. Also, check out reviews. You can find ours on google or trustpilot: https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/www.pgmpestcontrol.co.uk On a final note, at PGM & Son we offer a more personalised service. That’s because we live and work in Herefordshire ourselves. We rely on word of mouth referrals. We have a vested interest in our county and neighbours. • Return of the Harlequin Ladybird

The Harlequin Ladybird (Harmonia axyridis) first appeared in the UK in 2004. Soon after it's arrival, it was exceptionally quick to colonise new areas of the country, whilst substantially strengthening its existing populations in the south-east. Within the space of a couple of years, it had reached the north-west of England, Herefordshire and the Welsh borders. Native to the Far East, including Japan and Korea, the Harlequin ladybird - also known as the Asian Lady Beetle - population has exploded across Europe over the last 15 years. You may see them cluster around window frames or on doors and although they are not harmful, they excrete a foul smelling liquid if disturbed which may also stain fabrics and upholstery. With record breaking temperatures this summer, people are already reporting swarms of ladybirds sweeping the country. The last year temperatures reached similar high was in 1976 when a ladybird invasion also took hold across the UK in the Autumn. Due to the potential threat to our native ladybird species, people are advised to seek professional pest control advice if faced with a ladybird invasion. Unlike most other ladybird species, the Harlequin doesn’t stick to one type of food. It feeds primarily on aphids in crops, moving onto other ladybird eggs, larvae and even the eggs and caterpillars of moths and butterflies. The Harlequin ladybird has a raging appetite and, one of the reasons why they pose such a threat to our native ladybird is that they out compete them for food. They hibernate in large numbers in houses and other buildings. In some cases, tens of thousands of ladybirds have been found in homes during winter. And, in the Spring, they look for a way out as they become active again. You can find out more about the UK's native ladybirds by visiting the UK Ladybird Survey website. If you’re concerned about a ladybird problem, call PGM & SON Hereford for advice on 01981 241334.

  • Hereford Pest Watch For Autumn 2018

At PGM we have had a busy year dealing with all aspects of pest control in Herefordshire. Not all pests are prevalent throughout the year and we think it is helpful to let you know which pests to watch out for over the coming months so you can prepare and prevent them entering your home and outbuildings, with our tips and advice on what signs to look out for. From the start of October many insects disappear altogether. Depending on the weather, rodents and birds will seek warmer environments to shelter and survive the winter, so it is important to be vigilant and make sure all entrances into buildings are sealed and secured. Your pets bedding maybe a source for cat fleas (Siphonaptera) which bite humans, they appear when the days become colder. So ensure you wash bedding and toys regularly. Autumn is the time of the spider when levels can be expected to increase as they head into properties to begin breeding. In Britain you are unlikely to be bitten, or harmed in any way, by spiders. Dangerous spiders do of course exist, but unless they've been accidentally imported from abroad, hidden in a bunch of bananas for example, the spiders you find at home in Hereford will pose very little risk. Common Pests In Autumn Rodents Just like you, rodents such as rats and mice are looking for a warm place with lots of food to spend the colder months in Herefordshire. However, you might not be a fan of sharing your warm place with rodents. The biggest problem these pests bring is their friends. Mice and rats rarely travel alone, and can fit through the smallest of holes in your home, outbuildings and farms. Rat teeth are even stronger than human teeth and are capable of chewing through brick. To help prevent their arrival, store food in airtight containers and seal up any cracks and holes before the first frost arrives. Cockroaches Cockroaches can not only spread 33 different kinds of dangerous bacteria, they can trigger asthma attacks in children, which makes them one of the most dangerous pests out there. These naturally shy pests don’t like to be seen in the light of day. So if you have spotted roaches recently, there are probably many, many more you haven’t seen. Flies Though less common outside in the winter, these particularly unpleasant creepy-crawlies can be found indoors in high numbers. They’re attracted to the warmth and once comfortable, will rapidly multiply. These insects can be especially ruinous to service-industry businesses like restaurants and hospitals. They are both notorious for spreading infectious diseases and dirt. Keeping Autumn Pests Out of Your Home & Business It is essential that you check around the outside of your property for any small access points and seal them up. You would be shocked to see how small a hole has to be to allow rodents into the building. You can also make your home or business a less obvious target by ensuring that bins -particularly those containing food waste - are always securely closed and ideally a fair distance from the property. You should also avoid leaving any foodstuffs on worktops or on the ground, if you have a composting system then make sure it is kept well away from your home. Even dried dog food can be appealing for rodents so ensure containers are sealed at all times. Inside, be sure to check any unused spaces at regular intervals so that you can identify an infestation as early as possible. Keep unwanted pests out of your property with tips and advice from the pest control experts at PGM & SON Herefordshire. If you are looking for a pest control expert who has the experience and expertise to provide an all-year round solution for your commercial property then call us today on 01981 241334. WE ARE A GENUINE LOCAL, FAMILY RUN PEST CONTROL BUSINESS serving Herefordshire and the surrounding areas for all your pest control needs. Call Phil on directly 07964 370480.

  • BBC Rip off Britain Slates UK’s National Pest Control Firm Rentokil

One of the largest pest control companies in the UK featured on this week’s episode of Rip Off Britain, hosted by Angela Rippon, Gloria Hunniford and Jennie Bond. It comes not long after the news that city traders were predicting growth in Rentokil after reports that the firm was reshaping to focus on the higher-margin pest control business at a much faster rate than anticipated. It certainly seems that Rentokil is making a killing from its customers if the BBC report is anything to go by. Members of the public alleged that Rentokil was charging astronomical rates to carry out pest control treatments with one viewer reporting that Rentokil charged him well over £500 for a 3 visit mouse control job. With local pest controllers around the country quoting a fraction of the price (up to £190 in different regions across the UK) for the same job it does seem a little over-priced! To watch Rip Off Britain: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0b7rsc5 At PGM & SON Pest Control Hereford we have a fair and transparent charging policy. A three visit rodent control job is normally priced at around £150 (subject to site survey), meaning Herefordshire residents requiring pest control services pay a fraction of the cost the big guys in the industry charge. PGM & Son is able to offer Hereford residents low rates because we are a local, family run business with low over heads. We’ll always give you a price up front, telling you if that price may change (for example, because there are access issues in your property) and, if we can’t give you a price up front, we’ll explain why. Rip Off Britain also made the point that members of the public should check a pest controller’s qualifications, experience and insurance. We regularly give advice to Hereford residents on the importance of checking who their local trader is and that they’re qualified to do the job. Check out our past blogs on this subject. Our website www.pgmpestcontrol.co.uk clearly explains what qualifications, experience, insurance and other certification we hold. However, if you’re not sure please ask us as we’ll be happy to provide copies and answer any questions or concerns you may have. If you don’t want Rentokil to make a killing from you, if you have a pest problem – don’t call in the pestbusters, call PGM & SON Pest Control; Hereford. Local number: 01981 241334 OR 07964 370480

  • Asian Hornet Outbreak - Herefordshire Pest Control

Amidst reports of an Asian hornet outbreak in Cornwall, bee keepers are being asked to be extra vigilant whilst bee inspectors are being deployed to monitor local bee hives. Whilst the Asian hornet isn’t any greater risk to humans than a bee, they pose a serious risk to honey bee populations causing damage to honey bee colonies. Members of the public are also being asked to be on the look-out for signs of the Asian hornet and to report any sightings to alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk together with a photo. We’ve seen a rise in calls for pest control for hornets recently although we’ve yet to come across an Asian hornet. If you have a hornet nest, or think you’ve spotted an Asian hornet give PGM & SON Hereford a call on 07964 370480. The 'Asian hornet', scientific name Vespa velutina, is an invasive non-native species from Asia. It first arrived in France in 2014, and has since been spreading rapidly, with the first UK sighting in 2016. It is a highly effective predator of insects, including honey bees and other beneficial species. It can cause significant losses to colonies, other native species and potentially ecosystems. Isolated Asian hornets nests have previously been spotted in Devon, Somerset and Gloucestershire. As Gloucestershire is the next county to Herefordshire, we encourage people to be extra vigilant particularly in September which is the peak activity period. So, what should you be on the look-out for? Well, the Asian hornet normally can be found high in trees or man-made structures (e.g. sheds), but sometimes closer to the ground (e.g. ceramic plant pots). As highly aggressive predators, they hunt honey bees and other insects and feed on fruit and flowers. With a glut of blackberries at this time of year it makes for an excellent food source. To spot the Asian hornet, use the comparison below: Asian Hornet Queen up to 30mm long Worker up to 25mm long Legs yellow at ends Dark brown / black abdomen with yellow / orange band on 4th segment Head dark from above, orange from front Dark antennae Entirely black velvety thorax Never active at night European Hornet Queen up to 35mm long Worker up to 30mm long Legs brown at ends Dark brown / black abdomen with yellow / Yellow abdomen with brown on upper part, not banded Head yellow from above and front Yellow antennae Thorax black with extensive brown markings May be active at night For more information, please visit: alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk or http://www.nationalbeeunit.com/ Hornet stings can be much more painful than a typical wasp sting due to the levels of venom they carry and, like wasps, they are capable of stinging multiple times. They’re also quite loud – a nest of hornets can sound quite frightening. Normally, hornets are great for the environment – they are important pollinators and nature’s pest controllers as they feast on aphids, making them a gardener’s best pal. However, the Asian hornet poses a real threat to honey bees and so speedy action needs to be taken to identify the species of hornet and deal with it correctly. If you’ve found a hornet’s nest you should call a professional pest controller to give you advice and NEVER APPROACH OR TOUCH OR ATTEMPT TO MOVE A HORNETS NEST YOURSELF. If you’ve got a hornet nest, don’t panic – call PGM & SON Pest Control Herefordshire today on 07964 370480. We’ll get rid of hornets for you, treat hornets’ nests and destroy and remove hornets’ nests for you. And we don’t just stop at tackling hornets’ nests – give us a call if you’ve got a wasp problem or any other pest problem for that matter!!

Importance of Commercial Pest Control Treatment Pest infestation can occur in any location regardless if it is a commercial or industrial business. Pest infestation is one of the major problems encountered any industry, be it food, hospitality, schools, retail, corporate offices, warehousing and more. When there are pests close by, the daily business operations will be affected, causing loss of revenue, drop in the number of customers, and possibly penalties or fines. In order to avoid any unnecessary business losses, you need to invest in commercial pest control. One of the most important reasons why businesses prefer to use commercial pest management services is the need to maintain a completely clean and healthy business environment. For example in a restaurant, it would be very difficult and unsafe to do any kind of business activities where cockroaches or rats are running around. Similarly, it would be extremely dangerous and harmful if you operate a childcare facility and have pests that can harm children through bites or contamination through waste matter. If you happen to spot any rats, cockroaches, flies or any other pests within the premises of your business establishment it is advisable to remove the unwanted pests as soon as possible. Removal of Contaminated Waste We also offer pest waste cleaning, removal and disposal services. If you've had a pest infestation in your business, treatment for the pest may not be the only solution. A pest infestation can result in a lot of mess, including pest urine and faeces, pest corpses / dead animals, potential disease and, quite often, a very strong and unpleasant smell. For example, if you've dead animals or pest mess we can clean the area hygienically for you, remove any mess and pest corpses and dispose of them safely for you to allow you to carry on with business as normal. We’ll clear your pest waste for you, disinfecting the area so it’s good for you to use again. And, PGM is registered as an upper tier waste carrier, broker and dealer under the Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011. So, we can remove your pest waste safely for you. Long term benefits Once you have used our commercial pest treatment services, you will not only strengthen your credibility as a safe and clean environment where customers can visit and do business with you, but you will also prevent any additional structural damage to the facilities as many pests tend to cause damage to property that may sometimes result in the need for costly repairs. So with a regular commercial pest solution regime you will not only provide a healthier environment for customers and staff, but long term you will also have fewer building repairs and operating expenses. Having taken precautions to prevent against insect infestations, you will be able to focus on the more important tasks in your life such as growing your business, keeping customers happy and ensuring your storage area, kitchen and work area are free of disease spreading pests. We are licensed pest controllers aiming to provide a one stop service to our customers.
